Barcelona come to decision on Frenkie de Jong’s contract

The powers that be at La Liga giants Barcelona have come to a definitive decision on the contract situation of midfield star Frenkie de Jong.

That’s according to Sport, who have this evening provided an insight into developments behind the scenes in Catalunya’s capital.

De Jong, for his part, has continued to play an integral role in Barcelona’s first-team setup across the season to date.

Despite frequently being subjected to what feels like unwarranted criticism on the part of the Blaugrana faithful, the Dutch international, save for a spell on the sidelines through injury, has been more or less an ever present in boss Xavi’s ranks in the middle of the park.

In turn, it should not come as a major surprise to hear of Deco and his team being keen to tie De Jong down for the long-term.

The former Ajax man’s importance is understood to have been reiterated to the Barca brass once more in midweek, by way of his stellar showing against Alavés.

Freed up by Andreas Christensen’s presence at the base of Xavi’s midfield, De Jong controlled the game from his engine room berth, through dribbling, passing, and tackling alike.

Barcelona, as a result, are keen to sit down with the 26-year-old in the near future, to discuss his terms with the club.

De Jong’s current contract is due to expire in the summer of 2026, but the call has been made, ‘and the new sports management led by Deco intends to negotiate an extension with him and his representative,’ as per Sport.
