Barcelona chief speaks out on Nico Williams pursuit

Barcelona president Joan Laporta has this weekend provided a fresh insight into the club’s summer pursuit of Athletic Club star Nico Williams.

The name of wide-man Williams, of course, took its place front and centre in the media headlines throughout the summer transfer window.

This came with the 22-year-old’s continued excellence for club and country alike having sparked widespread interest in his signature.

Barcelona, for one, pushed hard to bring Nico in for much of the summer, eager to unite the Spanish international with close friend Lamine Yamal.

At one point during the window, the transfer, in fact, was labelled essentially a formality.

Speaking to the media this weekend, the subject of comments he himself laid out regarding a potential deal during the summer were therefore put to the aforementioned Joan Laporta.

The Blaugrana president, however, was adamant that he at no point confirmed that a transfer was certain, explaining:

“We never said that we would sign him, but that we could do an operation of that volume. And we made it a little lower with Dani Olmo, who cost about 48 million.”
