Barcelona chief Deco drawn on selling De Jong & Araújo to fund Kylian Mbappé swoop

Barcelona sporting director Deco was this evening drawn on the means which would be required to bring Real Madrid-linked Kylian Mbappé to the club this summer.

The Portuguese held an interview with Jijantes on Wednesday, during which he was drawn on a whole host of interesting topics.

Front and centre, unsurprisingly, was Barcelona’s transfer strategy for the summer, amid rampant speculation in the media that something of a squad overhaul could be on the cards.

Deco hinted that as much looks unlikely at present, with the Blaugrana eager to hold as many of the club’s star performers as possible.

Pressed further on the subject, though, the Barca chief was asked if it would make sense to part with two high-profile stars – namely Frenkie de Jong and Ronald Araújo – if it meant that the funds required to bring in Kylian Mbappé would be secured.

Deco, however, was in no two minds regarding the possibility of as much.

Adamant that the loss of two pieces as important as De Jong and Araújo would not be offset even by the quality of Mbappé, he explained:

“Selling Frenkie de Jong and Araújo and bringing in Mbappé would be a mistake and would make the team worse.”
