Barcelona boss Xavi ready to test Andreas Christensen in new role

Barcelona head coach Xavi Hernández is preparing to move defender Andreas Christensen into a more advanced role in his XI.

That’s according to Mundo Deportivo, who have this afternoon provided an insight into the surprise plans of the man on the touchline in Catalunya’s capital.

It is of course common knowledge that Xavi and his coaching staff had been hoping for reinforcements at the base of their midfield setup, with a view to the 2nd half of the campaign.

With funds remaining limited, and no sales on the horizon, however, the arrival of such a player is beginning to look increasingly unlikely.

And as much, it would appear, has forced Barca’s headmaster into something of a rethink, when it comes to his engine room setup.

As per a report from Mundo Deportivo, amid the ongoing struggles of summer addition Oriol Romeu, Xavi is ready to turn to defender Andreas Christensen, as a new-look pivot.

The 27-year-old is viewed by both the Spaniard and Barca sporting director Deco as possessing the required qualities to take to the pitch in a more advanced role, having done likewise for the likes of Borussia Monchengladbach and the Danish national team in the past.

Once Iñigo Martínez returns to fitness, the plan is therefore to test Christensen in the middle of the park, particularly in fixtures deemed as ‘highly demanding’.
