Barcelona boss Flick identifies new priority midfield target

New Barcelona head coach has set his sights on the signing of a leading member of the midfield ranks at La Liga rivals Real Sociedad.

That’s according to Relevo, who point towards Mikel Merino as the player in question.

The name of Spanish international Merino of course took its place front and centre in the headlines in Catalunya’s capital earlier this summer.

As much came amid suggestions that Xavi had earmarked the former Newcastle United standout as the ideal addition to his engine room ranks.

Since the Spaniard’s dismissal, and the ensuing appointment of Hansi Flick, however, chatter surrounding Merino’s potential arrival at Barcelona has gone somewhat quiet.

This came amid suggestions that Flick did not see the 28-year-old as the correct profile, amid Barca’s public pursuit of a new ‘pivot’ specialist.

Evidently, though, such reports proved to be wide of the mark.

As per Relevo, in fact, the Blaugrana’s new headmaster is eager to add a ‘box-to-box’ figure to his options for next season.

And Merino, is considered as a player ‘who fits in perfectly and is to Flick’s liking’.

Not only that, but, ahead of the expiration of his contract with Real Sociedad next summer, the Euro 2024 winner could be available for as little as €20 million.

Though Barcelona are yet to move forward with an official proposal, as much is looking increasingly likely, with Merino himself ‘looking favourably on the possibility of a move’ to the Camp Nou.
