Barcelona alter stance on Wojciech Szczęsny’s future for next season

The brass at La Liga giants Barcelona have opened up to the possibility of extending Wojciech Szczęsny’s stay with the club beyond the summer.

That’s according to Diario Sport, who have on Saturday provided an insight into the situation.

Goalkeeper Szczęsny has of course spent recent weeks establishing himself as the new first-choice option between the posts in Hansi Flick’s Barcelona squad.

After initially being brought in to act as cover for Iñaki Peña following the long-term injury suffered by Marc-André ter Stegen, the Pole has more than proven himself to the Blaugrana coaching staff.

So much so that, according to Sport, Szczęsny could well see his contract terms extended over the months ahead.

Upon his arrival in Barcelona back in October, the former Arsenal and Juventus man signed terms through the close of the campaign.

The understanding, though, is that both parties are now increasingly open to extending their partnership beyond the summer.

As much would come with a view to Szczęsny acting as backup to Marc-André ter Stegen next season.

The 34-year-old’s performances over the remaining months of the term will play a role in the eventual decision made, but the signals look increasingly positive when it comes to Szczęsny’s chances of remaining a Blaugrana player through 2026.
