Axel Witsel is on the verge of joining Atlético Madrid, according to RTBF Sport via Matteo Moretto.
The Belgium international will sign with the Spanish side for one year with the option of a second year included.
The midfielder will join Atlético on a free transfer. He also had an offer from Marseille on the table.
Atlético manager Diego Simeone has spoken to the player about joining the club. The official signing is due to take place on Tuesday after he completes his medical.
Atlético wanted the Belgian in 2015 when he played for Zenit St Petersburg. Now, at the age of 33, he looks set to join Simeone’s team.
Witsel played 28 times for Borussia Dortmund in the Bundesliga last season, scoring scored twice in his final season with the German club.
Atlético will be his sixth club after stints at Standard Liege, Benfica, Zenit Saint-Petersburg, Tianjin and Dortmund. He has played more than 600 professional matches.
