Atlético turn towards Barcelona in search for new defender – João Félix makeweight?

The powers that be at Atlético Madrid have identified a member of the defensive ranks at La Liga rivals Barcelona as a potential summer transfer target.

That’s according to Relevo, who point towards Atlético as having set their sights on the signature of Iñigo Martínez.

Iñigo, for his part, has seen his future in Catalunya’s capital thrown somewhat up in the air ahead of the summer.

As much comes with the emergence of youngster Pau Cubarsí having seen the experienced Spaniard knocked down the central defensive pecking order.

Add to this the potential reintegration of Eric García, and, all of a sudden, Iñigo’s place in Barcelona’s plans for next season becomes altogether less clear.

And, as alluded to above, one club who could move to take advantage of as much over the months ahead come in the form of Atlético Madrid.

As per Relevo:

‘Atlético de Madrid are closely monitoring the situation of the Blaugrana center back.’

Diego Simeone and co. are understood to be long-term admirers of Iñigo’s talents, following his time in the Basque Country with Athletic Club.

With securing fresh blood at the back something of a priority ahead of the impending departure of Mario Hermoso from the Wanda Metropolitano, a move for the veteran Barca man, in turn, could finally come to fruition.

Not only that, but Relevo point towards Iñigo being used as a potential makeweight, in an exchange deal of sorts, for João Félix.

The Portuguese is currently on loan at Barcelona from Atléti, with the former known to be keen to extend his terms beyond the summer.
