Atlético Madrid’s Ángel Correa scores from the bench

Saturday’s 1-1 draw at home against 19th place Getafe wasn’t the result Atlético Madrid fans will have wanted, but the game produced an iconic moment: Ángel Correa celebrating his goal from the bench.

In the 60th minute of the match with the score still 0-0, a rebound off of a corner landed at Thomas Lemar’s feet. He took a long shot before the goalkeeper saved it. The ball then dropped in front of Correa who blasted it right under the crossbar.

The linesman determined the player’s position to be offside, prompting a pause in play when in the meantime, Diego Simeone’s two pre-planned substitutions came on, one of which required Correa to sit in the dugout.

While this was happening, VAR looked through the footage and gave the goal, triggering one of the most bizarre scenes seen this season: Correa running from the bench, already protected from the cold with his jacket on, to celebrate with his teammates and the fans.

The excitement from this spectacular occurrence didn’t last until the end of the game, as Saúl Ñíguez’s handball in the box resulted in a penalty for Getafe which was confidently converted by Enes Ünal in the 83rd minute.

This trip-up at the Metropolitano prolongs Atlético’s terrible home form, as reported by Marca, Los Colchoneros have only 15 out of a possible 30 points from their home matches this season.
