Atlético Madrid star Koke this weekend continued his climb up a list of all-time greats across the European football landscape. This came courtesy of his latest appearance in the colours of the Rojiblancos.
Diego Simeone’s troops were back in action on Sunday evening, making the trip to Anoeta for a La Liga meeting with Real Sociedad. When all was said and done in an impressive bounce-back performance, Atléti emerged on the right side of a 3-0 result.
The aforementioned Koke, meanwhile, played his part, introduced off the bench on the hour mark in San Sebastian.
And as alluded to above, in the process, the veteran midfielder secured for himself a piece of football history. As per a statement across Atlético’s social media platforms:
‘Last night our captain matched a football legend: Sir Bobby Charlton. 746 matches with the team of his life. Koke. The legend continues.’
Koke now sits behind only seven names when it comes to one-club players in the history of the sport, namely Ryan Giggs, Paolo Maldini, Javier Zanetti, Igor Akinfeev, Francesco Totti, Giuseppe Bergomi, and Jean-Luc Ettori.
