Atlético Madrid set to back Diego Simeone

Atlético Madrid suffered a shock 2-1 defeat at home to Mallorca at the weekend and could go crashing out of the Champions League tomorrow.

Despite a difficult spell on the field, the La Liga club are backing head coach Diego Simeone. Just a few months ago Atlético were crowned league champions under the Argentine manager.

The Madrid-based team face a crucial match against Porto in the Champions League on Tuesday. Simeone has helped bring the likes of Rodrigo de Paul and Antoine Griezmann to the club but has struggled to find the right eleven this season.

According to a report in AS, the club president and board of directors are set to back Simeone as he looks to navigate his way through an early season storm.

The 51-year-old coach has been in charge of Los Colchoneros since December 2011 and his current contract runs until the summer of 2024.
