Diego Simeone’s Atlético Madrid, on Tuesday, etched their names indellibly into the history books of the capital club.
Fresh off a concerning weekend defeat at the hands of Las Palmas, Los Rojiblancos turned their attentions towards matters on the continent, in a Champions League group stage meeting with Scottish heavyweights Celtic.
And, safe to say, when all was said and done, Simeone and co. got things firmly back on track.
Owing to doubles on the part of both Antoine Griezmann and Álvaro Morata, alongside further goals from Samuel Lino and Saúl Ñíguez, Atlético romped to an eventual 6-0 downing of Celtic.
And, as alluded to above, in the process, they made history.
As revealed by statisticians Opta, tonight’s win marked the biggest Champions League win ever recorded by the Madrid-based club.
In fact, it is a result only bettered on the European stage by an 8-0 drubbing of Irish outfit Drumcondra all the way back in 1958.
