Atlético Madrid legend hangs up his boots for good

Every footballer has to call it a day at one point or another. It may be due to injuries, a lack of playing time, or simply a lack of fitness due to age, but a footballer’s career can’t go on forever.

A La Liga and Atlético Madrid veteran has become the most recent player to hang up his boots, having revealed in a recent interview that he has no plans to step on the pitch again.

The man in question is Diego Godín, who made over 300 appearances in the Spanish top flight for Atlético Madrid and Villarreal.

As per Marca, the Uruguayan legend has officially shared that he has retired, after initially having stated his intention to retire back in July 2023.

The 38-year-old put his retirement on hold back in February in order to play amateur football for Uruguayan side Porongos, where he saw success by winning the national club cup.

However, This announcement seems final, as the legendary defender said, ‘This was my last year. That’s it. I told the people of Porongos. I’m not playing anymore.
