Atlético Madrid leapfrog Barcelona in race for Mats Wieffer

An update on the future of La Liga-linked Feyenoord star Mats Wieffer has been provided late this evening.

The name of midfielder Wieffer, of course, has long taken its place at the forefront of the media headlines in Spain.

This comes amid the widespread understanding that the powers that be at Barcelona have identified the 24-year-old as a potential addition to the club’s ranks.

Featuring regularly alongside Frenkie De Jong at international level, the Dutchman is viewed as the potential missing piece from Xavi’s midfield puzzle, owing to his deep-lying characteristics.

Barca, in turn, have been tipped to launch a January bid for his services.

If the latest word doing the rounds on Friday evening is anything to go by, however, then it would appear that the Blaugrana have now been overtaken in the race for Wieffer’s signature.

As per a report from Diario Sport, Atlético Madrid have moved to ‘take advantage’ of Barcelona’s financial restrictions, by stepping in with a move of their own for the Dutch international.

With Diego Simeone desperate for fresh blood at the base of his midfield, the Atléti brass have made first contacts with their counterparts at Feyenoord, in the hope of thrashing out a deal for Wieffer.

It is therefore concluded that, should Barca maintain any hope of bringing the ‘pivot’ in this month, they will need to respond with haste.
