Atlético Madrid knocked out of Champions League after Yannick Carrasco’s missed penalty

Diego Simeone discussed Atlético Madrid’s missed penalty against Bayer Leverkusen on Wednesday, explaining why Antoine Griezmann didn’t take the spot-kick.

“Griezmann was very tired. Carrasco grabbed the ball as soon as the referee went to the VAR. If a player asks for a penalty like Carrasco did, the teammates give it to him,” Simeone said.

The Argentine coach discussed a similar situation with a penalty against Espanyol, when the Belgian took responsibility and scored from 11 yards towards the end of the game.

Against Real Madrid it was also Carrasco who took the spot-kick, proving himself to be one of the best penalty takers at the club.

It hasn’t been Atlético’s Champions League, having missed some great chances against Club Brugge and Leverkusen. Los Rojiblancos have never been a lucky team when it comes to taking penalties.

They will travel to Porto for their final group game for a place in the Europa League.
