Athletic Club to offer Iñigo Martínez a new contract

Athletic Club are planning to offer Iñigo Martínez a new contract to extend his stay at San Mamés, report Marca.

The 31-year-old’s current deal with the Basque side is set to expire in June 2023 and he has been linked with a move away from the club over the last couple of months.

Barcelona have shown interest in signing the Spanish international, reportedly making an offer worth €15m plus €5m in variables during the summer transfer window. However, Athletic Club rejected the offer in the hope that they can convince Martínez to extend his deal.

Rather than offering an increase in his salary, Los Leones are planning to include bonuses in the centre-back’s contract based on his performance and the performance of the team as a whole.

Athletic Club are keen to finalise the negotiations before the end of this year as from January onwards Martínez is free to sign pre-contractual agreements with other teams.
