Athletic Club thrash Rayo Vallecano as they vie for Champions League places

Athletic Club came into the game on the back of Nico Williams signing a contract renewal that would keep the young star at the club until 2027.

The Basque outfit were hoping to continue their great run of form that has led them to fifth in La Liga and a hope of attaining Champions League football come the end of the season.

Rayo Vallecano travelled north on the back of a well-earned 1-1 draw with Barcelona as they looked to put themselves in with a chance of competing for Europe.

However, it was the home side who definitively came out on top as they thrashed the team from Vallecas 4-0 as Nico Williams celebrated his contract renewal with a goal of his own.

Gorka Guruzeta opened the scoring in the 23rd minute after his first goal was ruled out by VAR just ten minutes earlier. In the second half, Rayo came out strong and forced the Bilbao defense into a mistake, but Unai López was unable to capitalise.

The miss was further punished when Alfonso Espino put the ball into his own net. The game was then put to bed in the 64th minute when Iñaki Williams put the home side three nil up following a wonderful pass by Guruzeta, and Nico Williams added his name to the score sheet to score Athletic’s fourth, capping off the perfect game and week as a whole.

Athletic are now fifth in the league on 28 points, just three behind Barcelona and Atlético Madrid, while Rayo Vallecano drop to 11th.
