Real Madrid and Barcelona target, Nico Williams has provided an update on his future with the forward’s current contract at Athletic Club due to expire in June 2024.
Williams’ fine form has attracted interest from Europe’s elite clubs in recent months. The 21-year-old has one goal and five assists in 11 matches this season in all competitions.
The Pamplona-born player was expected to renew with the Basque side, however, the likes of Barca and Madrid had hoped they could still temp the player into leaving the club.
The contractual situation of the player had also given hope to the Spanish giants that they could negotiate with the player in January ahead of a permanent transfer in the summer, however, it is now unlikely that this potential deal will occur.
Williams speaks on his future
As reported by journalist Fabrizio Romano, Williams has all but confirmed his contract renewal with his current club.
After Monday’s draw with Girona, he said: “I’m happy here in Bilbao. Athletic fans can be relaxed, no worries.”
