Athletic Club boss Valverde provides early Yeray injury update ahead of Copa final

Athletic Club head coach Ernesto Valverde has provided an early insight into the wellbeing of defender Yeray Álvarez.

As much comes after the 29-year-old was forced into a premature departure from Athletic’s latest outing, on Sunday night.

En route to an eventual 2-0 defeat at the hands of Real Madrid, Yeray lasted just 25 minutes, before pulling up clutching his thigh.

After being tended to by the visitors’ medical team at the Santiago Bernabéu, it was quickly decided that the stopper was in no fit state to continue, hauled off for Dani Vivian as a result.

Less than a week out from the club’s Copa del Rey finale showdown with RCD Mallorca, it therefore came as little surprise when the subject of Yeray’s fitness was put to boss Ernesto Valverde post-match.

And the Spanish tactician went on to admit that his defensive star has picked up a problem in his adductor, the extent of which will be determined over the coming days:

“He has an adductor problem that we will evaluate in the next days. I wanted him to have time on the field and we’ll see how he is.”
