Aston Villa ready to pay Villarreal star’s hefty release clause

Premier League outfit Aston Villa are expressing a keen interest in the signature of a headline member of the attacking ranks at Villarreal.

That’s according to Relevo, who have this week provided an insight into the situation.

The player in the sights of the brass at Villa Park comes in the form of Álex Baena.

The name of 22-year-old Baena has of course taken its place front and centre in the Spanish media headlines over the course of recent days.

As much comes for a pair of reasons.

First, his remarkable display in laying on all three of Villarreal’s goals in a La Liga victory over Rayo Vallecano.

And 2nd, Baena’s come-and-get-me plea to Xavi’s Barcelona:

“I’d love to play for Barça! It’s one of my biggest dreams – they’re the best team in the world. The release clause is there and €60m is needed to sign me.”

As alluded to above, though, if the latest word stemming from the press is anything to go by, the versatile midfielder could yet find himself in an altogether different landing spot come the summer.

As per the aforementioned Relevo, Aston Villa are giving serious consideration to activating Baena’s release clause over the coming months.

Claret and Blue boss Unai Emery has personal experience overseeing the player’s development at Villarreal, and is desperate for a reunion in England with a view to next season.

In the case of Villa securing Champions League qualification, a €60 million bid is in turn being readied for Baena.

Significantly, it is also noted that La Liga’s leading assist-maker is keen on the prospect of linking back up with ex-manager Emery.
