The new position handed to Andreas Christensen in Barcelona’s XI has been confirmed late this evening.
The Blaugrana, of course, are currently locked in action.
Fresh off securing a return to winning ways at the expense of Osasuna in midweek, Xavi and his troops have made the trip to the Estadio Mendizorrotza, for a La Liga meeting with Alavés.
As things stand, the two sides remain deadlocked at 0-0.
And yet, this is not to say that the opening exchanges in Álava have passed without talking point.
This comes amid widespread chatter surrounding the latest team selection put forth by Barcelona head coach Xavi.
In Barca’s starting line-up to face Alavés being unveiled ahead of kick-off, it was noted that a trio of central defenders were present – namely Pau Cubarsí, Ronald Araújo, and Andreas Christensen.
As much gave rise to suggestions that Xavi may have been putting into place a new tactical setup, featuring a five-man backline, with two wing-backs.
This, however, has since not proven to be the case.
Instead, as confirmed by way of the early action at Mendizorrotza, Danish stopper Christensen has been tested in a new deep-lying midfield ‘pivot’ position.
It now remains to be seen how the experiment plays out…
