Ander Herrera: “Real Madrid have a special connection with the Champions League.”

Speaking in an exclusive interview with Marca, PSG’s Spanish midfielder Ander Herrera gave his thoughts ahead of the Champions League semi-finals.

Are you surprised that Real Madrid have reached the semi-finals?

No, I am not surprised. Madrid is the biggest club in the history of football, it is the reality and we have already seen this many times. Madrid have a special connection with the Champions League. I have seen it over several seasons, where they don’t start so well and end up fighting to win the competition.

Was the Barcelona game easier than expected?

I think our superiority in the first leg was not as brilliant as the result says. We were better and did things the way we should have. We knew our opponent’s weak points and how to hurt them. They were better in the second leg, when you have nothing to lose you lose that added pressure and end up getting the best out of yourself.

Do you see Messi at PSG next season?

When I arrived in Paris a year ago, other clubs were talking about Neymar every day and I didn’t like that because he had a contract and it had to be respected. I’m not going to do the same. Messi is a Barça player and I’m not going to add fuel to the fire.

Are you still helping people during the pandemic in Zaragoza?

Yes, with the city council during the pandemic we have helped the elderly by bringing food to their homes and we have also helped children in need by giving them school supplies.
