Amadou Diawara: I wanted to join Valencia

Speaking in an interview with AS, Roma player Amadou Diawara opened up about almost joining Valencia in January.

On Carlo Ancelotti at Napoli

“Carlo is a gentleman, everyone knows that. In the summer when he arrived, I remember that one afternoon I received several video calls from an unknown number. I didn’t want to answer, and minutes later I got a normal call. That’s when I answered and he said ‘hey, it’s the manager’. What a ridiculous thing to say (laughs). Another thing stuck in my mind. The day I left, he stopped his car to come and say goodbye to me and he did it in a way that I will remember all my life.”

Almost joining Valencia

“I was at the Africa Cup of Nations, they called me to tell me about the teams interested and I chose Valencia. I would have closed the deal straight away, but I waited for four, five more days and in the end nothing was done. I still don’t know why.”

Would you like to play in Spain?

“I love La Liga. If the opportunity arises, of course.”

The defensive midfielder only played four times for Roma in Serie A last season. His current deal with the Italian side runs until 2024.
