Bayer Leverkusen player Alejandro Grimaldo has spoken out over the speculation linking him with a return to Barcelona.
Left-back Grimaldo was hotly tipped to take his talents back to Camp Nou earlier this year.
This came ahead of the expiration of the former Blaugrana talent’s contract with Benfica.
Amid questions over the depth of Xavi Hernández’s options at full-back, it was in turn suggested that Grimaldo could be snapped up as a low-cost addition.
In the end, however, a transfer failed to develop, with the 28-year-old having instead made the move to Germany, with the aforementioned Bayer Leverkusen.
He has since gone on to enjoy a scintillating start to life in the Bundesliga, boasting seven goals and three assists across 14 appearances to date.
Speaking on Monday, the subject of the speculation linking him with a potential Barcelona reunion, and why as much failed to come to fruition, was therefore put to Grimaldo himself.
The Spaniard went on to reveal that, in reality, the Catalans never expressed any ‘real interest’ in bringing him back to the club.
“Barça never showed any real interest in me,“ Grimaldo told Jijantes. Yes, there were feelers between my agent and the coach, but there was never any offer to come back. In the end, we knew that there was a full-back in my position.”
“Barça had no interest in me. They were focused on the two full-backs they already had and didn’t consider other options.”
